4.) 10 things you would do if you didn’t have to work.
I polled my friends at Facebook and this is the prompt they picked for me this week. And I’m relieved because I really don’t have a memorable fishing trip to relay.
Last week Pat asked me if I didn’t have to work, what exactly I would do with my time. It was an easy answer…”I’d sit on the couch”. He was all “seriously?” and I was all “that’s what I’m working so hard for…so that one day I can just sit and do nothing…like my Mom.” and he was all “Have you even known your mother to sit down?” and I was all “well…no, but I can imagine that would be nice if she did and that’s what I want. To sit. Watch TV…maybe read a book or something.” And then he was all “That would last you maybe half a day before you started on some new project.”
And he’s right.
So here are the ten things I would do if I didn’t have to work:
1. Sit for half a day and start a new project.
2. Not spend my time being hounded by home daycare Food Program people who have nothing better to do than to worry about whether I fed kids oranges or apples for breakfast.
3. Think about becoming a pet psychic.
4. Probably save someone’s life.
5. Call everybody I know 4 times a day and ask them what they’re doing.
6. Two words: Roller. Derby.
7. Wear nothing but pajamas…luckily Target has just my type:
8. Start The Real Moms of the PTA reality series
9. Terrorize people online.
10. Sit for half a day and start another project.
Stacey says
I always think it would be nice to sit around to, but if I’m honest, I’d be bored to death too!
Mama Kat says
Yeah, I’ve also been known to say I wish I could have a sick day so I could do nothing…and then when I ACTUALLY get sick I hate myself for ever thinking such thoughts.
Tracie says
A sick day is so much different than a do-nothing-day, because on a sick day, you feel sick. On a do-nothing-day you feel fabulous. (clearly I am too well acquainted with do-nothing-days)
Erin says
I could sit for half a day, and then nap, and then sit for the rest of the day before going to bed! Ahhh what a life it would be!
Mama Kat says
I like that! A nap sounds like a great ‘project’ to get started on everyday!
Alison@Mama Wants This says
I think you’d make a very good pet psychic. You could start an online series of vlogs as one – good project idea?
Tracie says
That dog is so unbelievably cute. And I hate to tell you this, but I am a pet psychic and he is thinking, “I want to go live with Tracie” right now. maybe not.
I have a great story about food poisoning, but I already blogged about it.
Dominique @Dominique's Desk says
It would be great to sit around ..but I think I will pass that for much needed sleep instead.
June Freaking Cleaver says
That pet psychic thing? Didn’t you post about your pet predicting your death, or some other nonsense?
I already have that life, just sitting around. It’s not all that it’s cracked up to be. I’d rather have a job, since there are no little children at home to watch.
Stupid economy. Hire an old lady, will ya?
Carri says
What? YOU FORGOT DATELINE! How could you forget watching Dateline?! Keith will be soooo mad when he sees this.
Jessica says
I would hope that if you didn’t work you would still blog so we could all see you attempting roller derby.
Blissfully Jeanette says
Ooo, I’d love to be a pet psychic! That’s some easy money right there.
Caroline says
You are so funny! I’m so glad you are here to brighten up my Thursday (EARLY) morning!!
Karen and Gerard says
If I didn’t have to work, I’m sure I’d be reading and commenting on more blogs. I’m a week behind on these prompts so I’m doing this on next week. I have my 10 Favorite Fall Fashion one up today.
Teacher Girl says
I like your plan, especially the pajamas part ;)
Paula Kiger says
Hee hee hee – I LOVE your poll! And I think it shows how many of us vicariously want to have ten options to working (heck, one option would do most days!). I enjoyed your response!
Jen says
Now there is a goal to work towards.
Frelle says
I love your list!! The real moms of the PTA reality series gets my vote for one of the projects you need to begin! :)
Kathleen Basi says
Hilarious! Especially terrorizing people online. :)
Diane@BeStillaMinute says
Definitely should do the pet psychic thing. The world needs more of those. I need to know why my wiener dogs keep doing their business in my house every time I turn my back!!!
Dumb mom says
So pet psychic does my dog like Dumb Dad better than me? It’s starting to look that way and I just can’t comprehend that. I’m just so much nicer!
adventuresindinner says
I too was hard pressed to figure out a memorable fishing trip but the “not working thing” not so hard.
I’ve added to it and I would have unlimited time and money to go with.
As always, thanks for making me think and write each week.
Jayme (RandomBlogette) says
I keep telling myself that I can’t wait until I don’t have to work anymore and then I realize I would either be extremely bored or become a shopaholic and need to start working again so yeah there’s that.
Peg says
Trust me…the time flies by quicker than you realize.
Arnebya @whatnowandwhy says
I can promise you I’d sit for so much longer than a day. So much longer.
Dana K says
Hey, working moms need hobbies, too. I say go for it with the roller derby. You might want a face tattoo so you can up the intimidation factor.
Katie says
I’m retired an have more than 10 things so I didn’t pick this one. I did the flower thing. However, I agree you need to sit for a while, then start a new project. My main project is getting ready to move across the country. Then I would be a pet psychic.
Marta says
I feel like I would do a lot of sitting and starting of projects as well. The better question would be what would you do if you didn’t have work and had unlimited income. That would greatly change my answers.
Francesca says
Wait. I’m confused.
You don’t already do all these things?
I’m looking at #9.
OneMommy says
Sitting on the couch sounds nice, but I probably wouldn’t last too long at that either… And I’d be calling people all day to see what they’re doing, so people would stop answering the phone; then I’d worry about them… So I guess I’ll continue chasing kids around and starting projects I don’t have time to finish!

is the linky not working?
Kim @ The Family Practice says
Where’s the entry upload? :(
http://thefamilypracticeblog.com/2011/09/29/dont-have-to-work/
Brae says
Hahah! I love your sense of humor. I think I must take myself too seriously. Because I DON’T have to work, and I have my own big ol’ list of stuff I’d do if I didn’t have to do anything else…and it’s all realistic. Yours is great. I need a better imagination.
Brae says
Did something happen to the linky? I can’t find it to read other people’s prompts.
Miss Marina Star says
YES! Sit for a day. Actually, I’d probably change that to – Sit on the couch until I’ve finished every episode of every season of every show that I’ve missed since having children…and maybe even before that. Definitely at the very least I’d clean out my DVR!
So when we’re all done with this work thing, we can pull together a bloggers roller derby team? I’d totally be down for that!
morgan says
If I wasn’t such a chicken I would roller derby, too. But, alas. I’m a chicken.
Minivan Mama says
I would so tune for The Real Housewives of the PTA…I can’t think of more drama!
Mrs. Weber says
I think you need to start a revolution to get Bravo to buy your idea for the ‘Real Parents of the PTA’ show concept. I bet it would be a smashing hit :)
Maggie S. says
It was hard to pick just one prompt, so naturally, I went with the more difficult.
Tiffany says
Just found you, so glad I did, can’t wait to do this!
Maggie S. says
…how come the food poisoning ones I read are so sweet? Amazing.
Tonya says
Aw… to live a live of leisure and Dateline. :)
Maggie S. says
There are so many more than 10. Like going to the movies. Everyday. This post made me think about ideas for homeschooling. Isn’t that weird?
hillary says
I love the “probably save someone’s life” one. That’s totally what I would do if I had the time.
Feyella @Parentingsmh says
I think I would be the same way. I doubt I could ever not be doing something. When I thought about doing this prompt, all I could think about was all the small businesses and hobbies I could have.
Jennifer says
I couldn’t write on this prompt because sit on the couch and watch TV is exactly what I would do if I didn’t have to work anymore. And read. I would read a lot. And blog.
Texan Mama says
Save someone’s life? Uh, do I need to remind you, you already DID save Maile’s life in that pool thing with your sister…
See? You’re a working mom AND you save lives, you multi-tasker.
Desperate Housemommuy says
Wait…Target makes footed sleepers for grown ups?
I need to go shopping now.
Daria says
Loved the post. Lol your real parents of the PTA!
I wrote a post about labeling this week. First time doing this and not sure I liked up correctly. Something went wacky with the “likey”. Should I link up again?
Daria says
Oops.. Here is the link. http://www.anunexpectedpath.com/2011/labels-are-for-cans
Self Sagacity says

John says
Hi Mama Kat,
Just thought I would let you know I nominated you for the Versatile Blogger award and If you haven’t been nominated before (which I would find hard to believe) You can check out my blog for instructions on the remaining requirements.
Cori says
hahah i love the terrorizing people online!!!
